In the main stream personal care industry,
shampoo is a perfumed
detergent solution.
A detergent is a synthetically made
chemical compound. It is normally a powerful wetting and cleaning
agent compared to soaps. Detergents work best on clothes, machinery,
etc. to remove the dirt, grime and other impurities.
Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, abbreviated as SLS is the recommended
detergent for use in shampoos in the U.S. However it has not been
researched on the heads of people and proven beyond doubt to be a safe
detergent for use on hair. Other common detergents are SLES (Sodium
Laureth Sulfate), Coco DEA (diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine), &
TEA (triethanolamine) and others.
Detergents are not recommended for use in toilet soaps – soaps for the
body. Why? Because detergents are not safe enough to use on a regular
basis on the skin. While shampoo is meant for cleaning the outside
hair, it also cleans the skin around it, the scalp. Then what about
the scalp? Is it made of plastics or steel?
Vitamin D is produced by the skin with the help of sunlight. Vitamin D
is needed for healthy skin and bones. The Vitamin D at the scalp can
be stripped off when using a detergent shampoo.
After the use of Selenium Sulphide based anti-dandruff shampoos, the
Selenium content in the hair is more than what it was before. This is
a researched fact. The dissolved items in the shampoo go into the
roots and inside the hair. Water will eventually evaporate or dry out
and can leave some things behind. If the Selenium can adhere, why not
other chemicals? What ingredients in the shampoo will get stuck at the
roots, or inside the hair, is a matter for your imagination to ponder.
Justly, a toilet soap, or personal care soap, should be made from a
vegetable oil. Vegetable Oils like Coconut oil, Sunflower Oil / Olive
Oil, Safflower oil etc. are chemically known as "Glyceryl Fatty Acids"
Glycerin, which is a poly hydroxy alcohol – a moisturizer. Soap is
normally weaker in wetting and cleaning power, and can be costly
compared to detergents. So it is more profitable for a shampoo maker
to use detergents rather than soap and that is why, normally, shampoo
is a liquid detergent solution.
Above the “basic roots of the hair”, there are glands called Sebum
Glands. They produce Sebum that gets to the outer skin with the help
of the hair stem. Sebum is an oily, greasy product which makes the
skin, supple and water resistant. Detergent Shampoos remove the very
important Sebum and the essential body oil as well.
There are products called Chemical Depilatories - Hair Removers.
Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) is an essential ingredient of hair
removers - its function is to remove the protective film of Sebum from
the scalp.
